Located approximately 25 miles north of Atlanta lies the city of Buford, Georgia. With a population of about 15,000 people, it has the feel of a small town but is within easy driving distance of the big city. If you’re looking to escape the fast-paced life in the city, Buford could be the perfect spot to relocate. The city is nestled on the southern shore of Lake Lanier and offers plenty of water-based recreational opportunities. It is popular for boating, swimming, and fishing. With so many beautiful outdoor areas nearby, like the Shoal Creek Campground or Sawnee Campground, it’s easy to find great spots for camping and hiking as well. If you prefer something a little more laid-back, the Lake Lanier Islands Resort offers excellent restaurants, shopping venues, and a golf course.
The city was founded in the 1870s. The land was originally purchased by Thomas Garner and Larkin Smith to be developed as a railroad city. The town was named after Algernon Sydney Buford, who was the head of the Atlanta and Richmond Ait-Line Railway. When the new railways were built, the city started expanding and opened to new industries. It quickly became known for its leather goods, and was even known as “The Leather City."
